During January and February, VALISE Artist Collective and Gallery welcomes its first artist in residence Tom Hughes. VALISE received dozens of applications from around the world. Ironically it was the work of local artist Hughes that stood out.
Tom Hughes is an internationally exhibiting artist, previously rooted in Buffalo, NY before a summertime relocation to Vashon Island. He works with language and simple structures to create sculptural and architectural spaces where the viewer can approach the work one on one. His materials have ranged from firecrackers to steel, and most recently adapted to found, recycled materials such as cardboard and plywood.
The words function as a point of familiarity: They can be a voice of instruction, or of co-conspiracy. They may share secrets or reflect on our common predicament, they may contradict themselves or perhaps crack thoughtful jokes. Of course they are open to interpretation.
During this residency, Tom will be developing a set of these sculptural works on site using locally available materials. The gallery will function as an open studio space, with the public welcome to visit, watch, play, talk and help.
Some forthcoming works may resemble helmets, duct work, mazes or pavilions. In all cases, these exemplify shelters, removals, protection or hiding spaces. They are spots where we can be alone together with our thoughts, where I can get a word in edgewise. They should hopefully make us think, smile, look at things differently, and ultimately, recognize our connections.
Meet Tom Hughes at VALISE on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. VALISE is open First Fridays 6 to 9 pm and Saturdays 11 am to 5 pm. www.VALISEgallery.org
