During the month of July, VALISE member Brian Van Buren and guest Sana Krusoe, Associate Professor of Arts, Ceramics, at the University of Oregon, will display pieces from their respective series, providing a rich experience of form, texture, color, and perspective.
For July's show, Sana is installing pieces from her "fuse" series, which is fundamentally a study of place, home, and desire through the lens of bird migration. Her work involves luminous porcelain forms, some etched with points of departure and arrival, or fragments of celestial maps, notations of weather, and the blush of desire. Sana states that "Many of the pieces are based on wing forms, particularly as the wing rises, descends or dives. All are moving in a field of desire for home, for food, for breeding."
Brian is showing current work from his "thicket" series, an expression in oil paint of "the situation or mess we sometimes find ourselves in either by our own doing or other's which we need to find our way through." The paintings convey a changing perspective of our involvement in these situations, whether viewed from the outside or deeply intertwined within.
