Vashon Artists Linked In Social Engagement

September 2010 - 4W

One of VALISE's September artists, Rebecca Roberts, conducted a hands-on clay experience with 13 attendees at Valise Gallery on Sunday September 5th. Clay was once mountain and stone. It is transformed over the ages by weather and time to become the plastic material we worked with. Each person stepped away from the busyness of his or her daily lives to be still together and focus on forming a pinch pot. As we sat in a circle, each of us began with a similar piece of clay. We closed our eyes to be able to better feel the interaction of this earth we held and the pressure of our fingers as we formed our vessels. Although each of us began with the same material and followed the same procedure, when we opened our eyes we saw we had each produced a unique vessel mirroring our own hands and personalities.

Participants in this experience have placed their vessels outdoors to witness their transformation back to the earth. Watch the website for pictorial updates of the return process.

(4W = VALISE hosts free activities inside and outside the gallery each month, as part of the collective's 4W program: events that take place during, or close to, the fourth week of the month....or for example, not in the fourth week, like this month!)
